So we settled on Mexico to explore our expat living. As mentioned in several other blogs we love the culture, people, food, and Cost, an expansive variety of unique landscapes and opportunities to explore.

As you know from our past blogs and podcasts we Chose Mexico for an expat life based on the fact that it is a wonderful destination given its rich culture, strong community and family values, landscapes, and cost of living. When considering residency in Mexico, both Temporary and Permanent residencies offer unique benefits. Let’s break them down:

First things first. You must start your residency journey in your home country more specifically, your state. Each state has a Mexican Consulate and each consulate has a different set of financial requirements for temporary and permanent residency requirements. The process should be simple but the rules may change- we had to visit our consulate in Philadelphia twice, a little frustrating but don’t give up; also make sure to have all of your documents

Temporary Residency Benefits:

1. Duration & Renewability: Temporary residency can last for a year and is renewable for up to four years.

2. Flexibility: It’s a good choice for those unsure about making Mexico a permanent home. You can test the waters without a long-term commitment.

3. Work Opportunities: With the appropriate permissions, you can work legally in Mexico with temporary residency.

4. Property Ownership: Temporary residents can buy property in Mexico, though there are restrictions in certain zones (like coastal areas).

5. Access to Local Services: Like healthcare, banking, and more at rates often more favorable than for tourists.

6. Drive a Foreign Vehicle: Temporary residents can legally drive their foreign-plated vehicles.

Permanent Residency Benefits:

1. Indefinite Stay: Once you obtain permanent residency, you can stay in Mexico indefinitely without needing to renew your status.

2. No Restrictions on Work: Permanent residents can work without special permissions or additional paperwork.

3. Easier Property Ownership: Fewer restrictions on buying and owning property, even in restricted zones, compared to temporary residents.

4. Access to Social Services: Permanent residents have broader access to Mexican social services, including healthcare.

5. Retirement Benefits: Mexico has some benefits for retirees, and permanent residency may provide easier access to these.

6. No Need for Foreign Vehicle: Permanent residents are expected to nationalize their cars or buy a vehicle in Mexico.

7. Naturalization Pathway: After a certain period, permanent residents can apply for Mexican citizenship, if desired.
